Transdisciplinarity and the Unity of Knowledge: Beyond the Science and Religion Dialogue

About MGN

The Metanexus Global Network (MGN) is an interdisciplinary, inter-institutional, international network dedicated to discovering and applying transdisciplinary approaches to the most profound questions of life, the cosmos, and humanity. It consists of individuals and groups of scholars, researchers, teachers, representatives of faith communities, and engaged citizens who seek, beyond the knowledge generated by the various fields of research and human endeavor, to explore the prospects for synthesis, wholeness, and the unity of knowledge. In short, the Metanexus Global Network exists in the service of the quest for wisdom.

The Metanexus Global Network supports collaboration between persons, disciplines, academic institutions, and faith communities. In addition to promoting activities at the local level, the Metanexus Global Network seeks to foster regional, national, and international research projects. Various regional and thematically based “subnetworks” are already in operation, investigating scientific, philosophical, and theological questions that transcend the boundaries of any disciplinary or institutional expertise.

Participants in the Metanexus Global Network are working in a wide variety of ways to effect positive transformation in our educational practices in order to provide a complement to (not a replacement for) our powerful analytical methodologies. The Metanexus Global Network is strongly supportive of science, and advocates for basic and transdisciplinary research aimed at discovering the nature and deep structures of the universe and persons. The Metanexus Global Network seeks to revitalize philosophical and theological approaches to the questions that confront all of us by informing them with innovative scientific research.

The Metanexus Global Network seeks to combat “scientism” by finding the sciences’ place within the sphere of humanistic learning. It seeks to combat “fundamentalism” by tempering existential commitments to fundamental worldviews with humility and openness to mutual exploration. It seeks to combat “reductionism” by investigating possible avenues to synthesis while respecting the integrity of the various spheres of learning.

The Metanexus Global Network advocates calling colleges and universities back to the core of their historic mission: the education of persons to be informed and active citizens in a globalized world. It aims at something like the whole story of the whole cosmos for the whole person.

The Metanexus Global Network is open to individuals, groups, and institutions regardless of field of expertise, institutional affiliation, national origin, or religious commitment. The Metanexus Global Network is supported in part by grant programs, such as the Metanexus Local Societies Initiative and the Metanexus Global Network Initiative. It is also supported by individuals, colleges, universities, independent research institutes, corporate sponsors, and faith communities around the world.

You and your colleagues are warmly invited to join the Metanexus Global Network today; to sign up to receive information and news on conferences, publications, grant opportunities, and research projects; to find out about the activities of local groups in your area; to consider applying for MGNI grants; and to engage with some of the world’s leading scholars, scientists, philosophers, and theologians in the pursuit of the biggest questions of life, the cosmos, and humanity.
