The Global Spiral invites quality submissions of articles, essays, and book reviews that explore the interface of religion, philosophy, science and culture. We are interested in publishing pieces that will engage not only a multidisciplinary audience of scholars, but also thoughtful lay readers.
The Global Spiral is an online intellectual magazine, not a peer-reviewed professional journal. We therefore offer prospective authors the following guidelines to aid in the preparation of their submission:
- Complex ideas and unfamiliar concepts should be contextualized with consideration for the intended audience. Pieces weighed down by technical jargon and abstruse academic argument will be rejected, or the author may be asked to resubmit.
- Writing that is literary or journalistic in style will be regarded favorably. The use of literary devices such as narrative, theme, context, setting and imagery makes for good writing, and it is good writing that we are interested in publishing above all.
- We generally discourage submissions of personal manifestos, treatises, and pieces that are based entirely in one’s subjective, phenomenal experience. Per our experience, these works tend to be prohibitively esoteric and to lack basis in scholarly or intellectual thought. An insightful essay need not explicitly reference scholarly literature, however, to appear in The Global Spiral, it should at least incorporate or draw upon ideas from humanity’s intellectual heritage.
In short, we are interested in publishing pieces that exhibit that rare combination of erudition and accessible, engaging writing style. While this comes naturally to some writers, we realize that it is more difficult for others. Our editorial staff is willing to provide guidance and feedback, but we beg your patience if we cannot respond immediately. We are a very small and continually busy staff.
In addition to these stylistic guidelines, prospective authors should also adhere to the following technical requirements:
- Submissions of articles, essays and book reviews should not exceed 5500 words.(Suggested length for book reviews is between 1500 and 3000 words.)
- All submissions must be in Microsoft Word (.doc) and sent to editor@metanexus.net as an email attachment. Submissions placed in the body of an email message will be discarded without review. We apologize but we cannot accept, nor will we acknowledge, hard copies of manuscripts.
- Authors must include a brief biographical sketch (no more than 150 words). This should be placed in the body of the email message.
The Global Spiral is willing to consider previously published material, however, the author must either own the rights or have cleared permissions with the original publisher.
