Having significant exposure to disciplines in the liberal arts in conjunction with a primary area of study is a distinctive feature of higher education in the United States. Barbara Lynn Gordon received her doctorate in Research and Evaluation in English Instruction from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She is currently an associate professor of English at Elon University in North Carolina where she teaches writing and interdisciplinary courses. In collaboration with two oncologists and a pharmacologist, she is the lead author an interdisciplinary book on advanced breast cancer that is forthcoming next year from Duke University Press.
