Howard S. Baker, MD is Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at University of Pennsylvania Medical School.  He received his BS and MD degrees from The University of Wisconsin, Madison, and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honorary fraternity.  Following an internship at San Francisco General Hospital, he completed his psychiatry residency at the University of Pennsylvania.  He and his wife Margaret published Heinz Kohut’s Self Psychology: An Overview in 1987, and it continues to be used regularly to introduce the subject to students.  His publications have considered academic underachievement, the creative process, and the comprehensive treatment of adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.  He has completed and mentored the 4-year, intensive, adult religious education program for laity developed by the School of Theology of the University of the South (Episcopal).  At the 28th Annual International Conference on the Psychology of the Self, he presented “Bidden or Not Bidden, God is Present,” an examination of religion and self psychology; and he discussed Ann Eisenstein’s paper “Kohut and Kaplan: God as Collective Selfobject.”  In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he is in the private practice of psychiatry in Philadelphia.
