Ryan McIlhenny is an Associate Professor of History at Providence Christian College. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, the son of a minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. As such, he benefited from a Reformed education from his youth, which continued and deepened at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, GA, where he received a B.A. in history (although he spent most of his time studying philosophy). After college, Dr. Mac earned an M.A. in history from Cal State University, East Bay, and a Ph.D. in the same subject from the University of California, Irvine (Go Anteaters!…Oh, and Derrida). His dissertation examined the polemical relationship between radical antislavery and popular anti-Catholicism in early America.Along with teaching undergraduate history courses at UC Irvine, Irvine Valley College, and Cal State Fullerton, Dr. McIlhenny has presented a number of papers at academic conferences around the country and has written articles and reviews for a variety of journals, including Fides et Historia, Southern Studies, and The Journal of the Early Republic. He is currently revising his dissertation, “To Preach Deliverance to the Captives: Antislavery and Anti-Catholicism in the Religious Writings of George Bourne (1780-1845),” for publication. McIlhenny met his wife, Becky, at Covenant College. They have two sons, Fisher and Canon. In his spare time he enjoys studying philosophy and theology, seeing a good film, playing with his sons, cooking, and backpacking. He is excited at the opportunity to work at a much-needed Reformed institution of higher learning on the West Coast.
