Dr. Abubaker al-Shingieti (moderator) is Regional Director of the Islamic Institute of Islamic Thought. Dr. Shingieti earned a BSc. (Honors) in Architecture and a Graduate Diploma in African and Asian Studies from the University of Khartoum, Sudan, and a Ph.D. in Communications from the University of Massachusetts.
An expert on Islam, he has been a Research Associate at the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and an active member of the Association of Muslim Social Scientists of North America. In addition, he served as editor of Islamic Horizons, a monthly magazine of the Islamic Society of North America and was a Founding Member of the Society for Islamic Thought and Culture in Khartoum.
Dr. Shingieti has had a distinguished career in government and the foreign service of the Republic of Sudan. He held Ambassador rank in his capacity as Director of Political Affairs for the Presidency (1995-98) and before that served as Councilor at the Embassy of Sudan in Washington, DC (1990-1993), and Secretary General of the External Information Council in Khartoum (1993-95). He has a strong commitment to inter-religious reconciliaton. Most recently, he was Vice-President for Islamic affairs at the International Center for Religion and Diplomacy (ICRD) in Washington, D.C.
