Dialogue in Religion and Science Group (DRS)
Moi University
Eldoret
This society has assembled a core group of participants, both professors and students, from the academic community of Moi University, Maseno University, and Western University of Science and Technology, representing the disciplines of religion, anthropology, botany, physics, chemistry, sociology, and language, to promote the public understanding of the critical value for a science and faith dialogue in Africa. The group comes together to explore topics such as the integration of science-religion and its relation to development and sustainability, holistic healthcare techniques of indigenous practitioners, and the challenge to traditional healers and Western-trained medical scientists to do collaborative work. Beginning with basic overviews of meaning, purpose, and methods in science and in religion, public offerings address the roles that each have played in Africa, and explore the potential for a contemporary interface for the future. Broadly advertised and promoted events are held at various locations each month to support extensive outreach to the public-at-large, scholars, medical doctors, and traditional healers, both within and outside of the university community. DRS supports collaborative public lectures with other institutions, increasing participation and membership by inviting others to participate in society events. An annual national conference also promotes membership development and outreach. DRS sponsors an essay competition for secondary and university students. A bi-monthly newsletter and conference proceedings are published to disseminate local and international news and activities in science and religion.
