Edith L.B. Turner is on the faculty of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Virginia. She specializes in ritual, religion, healing and aspects of consciousness including shamanism. Among her publications are The Spirit and the Drum (1987), Experiencing Ritual: A New Interpretation of African Healing (1992), and The Hands That Feel It: Healing and Spirit Presence among a Northern Alaskan People (1996). She is the editor of the journal Anthropology and Humanism.
