Fred Burnham

Bio

Dr. Fred Burnham is Director of Trinity Institute, a program for the continuing theological education of Episcopal clergy and laity sponsored by the Parish of Trinity Church, New York City. He was educated at Harvard, the Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge University, England, and The Johns Hopkins University, where he received a Ph.D. in the History of Science. He also holds an honorary degree from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He writes and lectures on the relationship between science and religion. Burnham began his career as Professor of the History of Science at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where he also served as a Dean of Graduate Studies. In 1978 he became the President of The Association of Episcopal Colleges until he moved to Trinity Church in 1984 to direct Trinity Institute. During his sixteen-year tenure as the third Director of Trinity Institute, Burnham has broadened the Institute’s audience by inaugurating The Episcopal Cathedral Teleconferencing Network, an interactive satellite-broadcasting medium. Trinity Institute’s National Conference, which engages the Episcopal Church in the most pressing theological issues of our time, now reaches over 600 downlink communities in all 50 states. In addition, Trinity Institute’s conferences are simulcast on the internet via http://www.ectn.org.
