Abel Alves is a professor of history at Ball State University. He is the author of The Animals of Spain: An Introduction to Imperial Perceptions and Human Interaction with Other Animals, 1492-1826 (Brill, 2011) and Brutality and Benevolence: Human Ethology, Culture, and the Birth of Mexico (Greenwood, 1996). His articles have appeared in The Sixteenth Century Journal, the International Journal of Anthropology, ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment, Theology and Science, and other publications. The biological underpinnings of history are the focus of his research, from ethologically explained human behaviors to the roles played by other animals in our historical development.
